What is Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)?

EFT is a holistic approach that combines elements of traditional acupressure and modern psychology. It involves tapping on specific meridian points on the body while focusing on the negative emotion or physical sensation you wish to address. This practice helps release emotional blockages and restores balance to the body’s energy system, offering relief from stress, anxiety, and other emotional challenges.

Why Choose EFT for Stress and Anxiety?

EFT is unique because it addresses both the emotional and physical components of stress and anxiety. Unlike medications, which may only mask symptoms, EFT works to release the underlying emotional energy causing distress. It’s natural, accessible, and easy to learn, making it a fantastic tool for anyone looking to manage stress and anxiety without the need for medication or expensive therapies. It can be done by children as well.

How EFT Works to Relieve Stress and Anxiety

  1. Identify the Stress Emotion: The first step in EFT is to recognise the specific situation that is causing (or has caused) the stress or anxiety. EFT works best if you can be specific about “A time when…” and have a snapshot of the trigger in mind. So if someone said something that upset you, it would be that specific time when they said that thing to you when you were in a particular space or place. It could also be a future time, for example having to deliver a presentation or looking forward to a difficult conversation.
  2. Rate the intensity of the emotion: Before starting the tapping process, rate the intensity of the stressful emotion on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being the most intense. This helps you track your progress as you work through the tapping sequence.
  3. Use the EFT basic recipe and tap as follows:
    1. Tap on the side of the hand (either hand) and say the following: Even though I have this <emotion> and I feel it in my <body part>, when I remember the time when… <add the when, who and what here>, “and that is how it is right now”. Repeat this 2 or 3 times
    2. Tap on the top of the head and say: This <emotion> in my <body part>
    3. Tap on the eyebrow point and say: This <emotion> in my <body part>
    4. Tap on the side of the eye and say: This <emotion> in my <body part>
    5. Tap under the eye and say: This <emotion> in my <body part>
    6. Tap under the nose and say: This <emotion> in my <body part>
    7. Tap under the mouth and say: This <emotion> in my <body part>
    8. Tap under the collarbone and say: This <emotion> in my <body part>
    9. Tap about a hand down from the armpit on the side of the body and say: This <emotion> in my <body part>
  4. It may be useful to take a deep breath in and release it & measure your intensity. For the most people, this would have gone down. If it is not yet at 0 or 1, repeat the recipe.
  5. If it does not work, it could be that you are not specific enough about the time when…

The Science Behind EFT

Research on EFT has shown promising results. Studies suggest that tapping can reduce the levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, in the body. By lowering cortisol, the body can move from a fight-flight-freeze response to a more relaxed state, allowing clearer thinking and emotional calm. This shift in energy allows you to approach stressful situations with greater resilience and ease.

Benefits of EFT for Stress and Anxiety

  • Immediate Relief: One of the significant benefits of EFT is its ability to offer immediate relief. After a few rounds of tapping, most people report feeling calmer and more grounded.
  • Empowerment: EFT gives you the tools to manage stress and anxiety on your own. Once learned, its’s a technique that you can use anytime, anywhere.
  • Long-term Results: With regular practice, EFT can help reduce overall levels of anxiety and prevent future stress from taking such a toll on your well-being, It can also help reframe negative thought patterns that contribute to chronic stress.
